Cellular agriculture
Only recently I came across some information about cellular agriculture. The popularised short version seems to be cell-ag. For me this is an extremely intriguing development. I was aware of the developments of cultured meat or lab meat; or whatever one wishes to call it. But it goes much further than that. It’s about nature being replaced by technology!
A study (AT KEARNEY Consultancy) indicates that by 2040 60% of the world’s meat consumption won’t be from slaughtered animals. Instead, it predicts a massive shift to lab-grown meat alternatives or plant-based products. “Industrialised meat production faces an image problem and the large-scale livestock industry is viewed by many as an unnecessary evil,” reads the report
If we look at developments in the human food market, we can already notice very prominent developments of plant based and cultured meat offerings. And global food giants investing in this development
Whether it is 60% or 40% or even less is of no importance I think. If this becomes reality, I am convinced that our pet food industry faces a huge challenge; and must prepare for massive change because a key ingredient – animal by-products – will only become available in small and insufficient quantities. Unless somebody starts to culture meat for the use in pet food; which I find highly unlikely.
It also applies to our industry that there is never a dull moment!
